Bears. Cuddly but definitely not cute. This subculture consists of butch homosexuals with big muscles and lots of hair. The term 'Bear' was coined by Richard Bulger (founder of Bear Magazine in 1987) and photographer, Chris Nelson. In reference to homosexual or bisexual men who are heavier set and have facial and body hair. This however was/is primarily affiliated with rural and blue collar men.
At the start of the movement, some 'bears' distanced themselves from the 'regular' gay community because they wanted to be seen as 'stronger' than the average homosexual male.
